ILPS Methods Under Development

The ILPS is developing a series of commercial methods for lecithin analysis.  Until standardized and adopted by the ILPS & AOCS these methods should be considered “experimental”.  Official standardized methods of analysis can be found at the ILPS Standardized Methods for Lecithin Analysis page.

  1.   A method is being developed for analysis of phospholipids in lecithin by HPLC. The method AM101 can be obtained from the Analytical Secretary Bernd Diehl or the Executive Director Willem van Nieuwenhuyzen. This method is approved by the DGF German Association of Fat Science as Official Analytical Method DGF F-I 6a (00). This method determines the main phospholipids PC, PE, PI, PA, LPC and N-Acyl PE.

  2.   For hydrolysed lecithins attempts are made to develop a HPLC method for quantitative analysis of all the 4lysophospholipids LPC, LPE, LPI and LPA. Due to baseline fluctuations and insufficient peak segregation, statistical reproducibility between laboratories failed so far. Method AM 101 can be used with acceptable repeatability in laboratories for following e.g. processing.

3.   New HPTLC equipment may encourage the development of a HPTLC method for the determination of all classes of phospholipids in hydrolyzed lecithin. Method DGF F-I (99) describes the procedure for standard lecithin.

4.   Standards can be obtained from Avanti Polar Lipids, USA by contacting www.avantilipids.com or Spectral Service, Germany by contacting info@spectralservice.de.
